President Benigno Aquino III, through Proclamation No. 826, has declared July 29, 2014 a regular holiday in observance of Eid’l Fitr or the end of the Ramadan. Malacanang announced the holiday on Monday, July 14, 2014.
According to Proclamation No. 826, the holiday was declared “To promote cultural understanding and integration, the entire Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr.” It was also purposed “to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness.”
The Eid’l Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, which is a month of dawn-to-sunset fasting among Muslims worldwide. Republic Act 9177 mandates the government to declare this Muslim celebration a national holiday.
